Mission and Service Inspirations
The United Church Responds to Disaster
Five representatives of the United Church, including Moderator Mardi Tindal, travelled to Haiti to show love and support for our Haitian sisters and brothers after the earthquake in January 2010.
Henri, a blind musician who lost his instruments in the quake, said, “I want to thank God and Canada for helping people living with disabilities, because after the earthquake our problems are worse.”
Normil, a member of St. Martin’s parish, is rebuilding his life after losing his home in the earthquake. He said, “I pray for all of the United Church every day, for you care so much for my people.” Our Haitian partners, including the Methodist Church of Haiti, asked the five visitors to thank you.
Your generosity to the Mission and Service Fund has enabled them to provide education, sustainable agriculture, and more. Your donations through the Haiti Earthquake Appeal in 2010 helped provide essential supplies of food and water. We can keep on supporting the people of Haiti through funds raised by the continuing appeal and M&S.
The Rev. Gesner Paul of the Methodist Church of Haiti is thankful for United Church support. “Those of us left behind,” he stated, “live with a new purpose…and everything points to more collaboration.” Moderator Mardi Tindal assured the Rev. Paul that we will continue to work with our sisters and brothers in Haiti through vibrant and effective partnership.
Together, we carry out the work of our United Church. Make a difference! Join the partnership! Support the work of the Mission and Service Fund today. The Mission and Service Fund on the other hand, is the unique way we as the United Church witness to God's love, whether it be with overseas partners, in Canadian outreach, in hospital or university chaplaincies, in supporting small congregations, or in assisting intern ministers. It is not really possible to compare the M&S Fund to any charity, it is much bigger and more encompassing than any of these. It is the church. The M&S Fund represents our collective way to be God's presence in the world; to be the church, to love and serve, to seek justice, to live with respect in creation. It gives us a collective voice in advocating change, justice and peace, whether through the Canadian government or in work with our ecumenical partners. The M&S Fund ensures that we are participating together in all of this work and more.
Mission and Service Sunday
On the first Sunday of each month, “Minutes for Missions” is part of our regular Sunday service. The young people contribute their talents by sharing a new story each month; stories that tell us about our Mission and Service Fund at work in Canada and around the world. Our loose collection on that Sunday is donated to the Mission and Service Fund.
We did it! 2010 saw our Mission and Service Fund dollar tracker moving just past our annual goal.
Thank you for remembering M & S in your weekly givings and supporting the M & S fundraisers in our pastoral charge.

The United Church, faith in action.
MISSION AND SERVICE TOGETHER
