Welcome to the
Riceville-Pendleton United Charge
History of our Ministers

The Riceville-Pendleton Pastoral Charge has evolved over many years, with proud histories in both communities.
The background of the United Church of Canada is made up of several denominations and we are no different. In Riceville the first minister was a Methodist gentleman who came on horseback from West Hawkesbury in 1835, walking as much as riding the trails that served as roads. The Scotch River was used for baptizing and the Nation River was used as a travel route.
The Pendleton United Church began as a Presbyterian Church, when Henry Moffatt, in 1886, granted the parcel of land where the Church still stands, to the trustees of the congregation.
Riceville was a three point charge with Fournier and George’s Lake forming the three congregations.
Pendleton and Hammond were associated and in 1914 fire destroyed the Hammond Church, records of both churches were lost. The manse in Riceville was destroyed by fire in the 1948 and again records were lost.
Mrs. Hillis, wife of the Rev. Hunter Hillis, organized the first Ladies Aid Society in Riceville in 1913 and in July 1973, charter members, Pearl Scott and Alice Gibb Scott were honoured at a celebration. Also included was Eliza Wert for her 54 years of service, she had originally been a member of Fournier church.
Pendleton joined with Riceville and George’s Lake in 1945-46 and Fournier church closed. George’s Lake Church closed in 1967.
In order for these charges to continue, there has been cooperation, sharing, dedication and a willingness to work together. At one time there were two services every Sunday; in 1983 it was decided that more could be accomplished with one service, alternating the location. This continues and has proved to have been a good decision.
In 1986 the Pendleton Church was raised, a foundation built and a full basement constructed and equipped, improvements were also made to the sanctuary.
Rev. Gail Christy became our Minister in 1992
In 2005 – 2006 the Faith Lift Project was undertaken resulting in the installation of an Elevator/Faith Lift in Pendleton United Church. This Project was a team effort form beginning to end and Rev. Gail was our inspiration.
And so, in small communities good things happen when people work together; not only within the church but the community and beyond, with no boundaries visible. Submitted by Margaret Scott History of Ministers
