Mary Isabelle Campbell Wylie

Mary was born on October 26, 1922 near Blenheim, a small town in southwestern Ontario. She grew up on a tobacco farm with her 3 siblings, Glen, Elda and Donald. Her parents, Douglas and Jean, were both school teachers. Douglas also served as an MPP representing Kent County in the Ontario legislature. The children worked alongside their parents picking tobacco, detasseling corn and helping with chores on the dairy/cash crop farm.
Following high school, Mary graduated from the University of Western Ontario with a degree in Science and later attended teachers college at the University of Toronto. During the war, she spent her summers working in a munitions factory in Hamilton Ontario. Her first teaching assignment was at Rockland High where she taught mathematics for 2.5 years. In 1946 she married a local farmer, Warren Wylie. They lived with their 4 children, Myrna, Freda, Gordon and Elda on a mixed farm on concession 6, North Plantagenet. Mary worked alongside Warren on the farm and was active in church and community.
In 1966 she returned to teaching and for the next 13 years taught mathematics at Hawkesbury High School. During retirement, Mary and Warren enjoyed their country home and community. They also spent time traveling and visiting family until Warren’s death in 1989. Afterwards, Mary continued to travel, kept busy with friends, children and grandchildren and maintained her role in church and community. She was an active member of Pendleton United Church, the UCW, the Women’s Institute, the local seniors group and the Retired Teachers Association. Mary passed away on July 20th, 2007 at the age of 84.
