I started to play the organ in Riceville at the age of 12. The organ was a pump organ converted to electricity, which included a blower or fan for lack of a better description, to replace the pumping motion – a challenge for an experienced organist, intimidating to say the least for a 12-year old. I had only received at that point, the most basic of music lessons and could only play hymns in the keys of C, F and G. The love of music prevailed and over the many years of challenges I have tried to teach the children in Sunday School and our adults that music can be both refreshing and uplifting as well as a balm to the soul. The sound of music is a wonderful thing, and even if you have to carry your tune in a bucket, it doesn’t mean that you cannot enjoy and appreciate music.
